🌿 A Refreshing Ritual Rooted in Tradition
Tereré is more than a drink — it’s a cherished cultural ritual in Paraguay, shared among friends and family as a symbol of connection and refreshment.
Unlike hot mate, tereré is served ice-cold, making it ideal for warm weather and long conversations. And while modern versions like Teko Yerba Mate make it easy to enjoy anywhere, learning the traditional method connects you to its roots.
Here’s how to prepare tereré the authentic way.
🧾 What You’ll Need
-
Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis)
-
Cold water (optional: infused with herbs or citrus)
-
Ice
-
Guampa (traditional cup, often made of horn or wood)
-
Bombilla (metal straw with a built-in filter)
-
Thermos or pitcher (to hold your cold water)
-
Optional yuyos (herbs) like mint, lemon verbena, or lemongrass
🧊 Step-by-Step: How to Make Traditional Tereré
Fill your guampa about halfway to three-quarters full with dry yerba mate. Tilt the cup slightly so the yerba forms a slope on one side.
Drop a few ice cubes into the cup. This helps keep the infusion cold as you sip.
Place the bombilla into the lower side of the yerba slope. Try not to move it once it’s in — this helps maintain the structure of the mate and keeps it from clogging.
Slowly pour cold water (plain or infused) into the lower side of the yerba where the bombilla sits. Let the water absorb for a few seconds.
Tip: Paraguayans often infuse their water with herbs (remedios yuyos) for added benefits and flavor. Try mint, chamomile, or lemongrass.
Sip through the bombilla, enjoy, and refill with more cold water. One serving of yerba can be used for several refills.
👥 How It’s Shared
In Paraguay, tereré is often enjoyed in a circle, with one person (the cebador) refilling the water and passing the guampa from person to person. It’s a ritual of community, not just hydration.
